Civil Enforcement Investigations

Many government entities are empowered to conduct civil enforcement investigations. The United States Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts Attorney General regularly conduct civil investigations and bring civil enforcement actions relating to labor violations, consumer protection, false claims, health care, data security and insurance and financial services. Additionally the Securities and Exchange Commission, and Massachusetts Secretary of State Securities Division conduct securities-related investigations. Although these well-known agencies have investigative and enforcement power, others have such powers, including

  • Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission (ABCC)
  • Massachusetts State Lottery Commission (MSLC)
  • Department of Professional Licensure (DPL)
  • Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC)
  • Cannabis Control Commission (CCC)
  • Department of Revenue (DOR)
  • Office of Campaign and Political Finance (OCPF)
  • Massachusetts Ethics Commission
  • Police Officer Standards and Training (POST)
  • Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)
