Areas of Practice

Trial practice, both criminal and civil. Mr. Butters represents individuals and companies in all types of cases including federal and state criminal investigations, trials and appeals. He has defended tax fraud, healthcare fraud, bank fraud, business fraud, export fraud and wage and hour cases; as well as drug trafficking, racketeering, gambling, and murder cases. On the civil side, Mr. Butters has represented large and small companies, including developers, travel companies, construction companies, and many other businesses in the federal and state courts, as well as in many arbitration proceedings. Arbitration proceedings have involved the securities laws, the travel and construction industries and other business disputes.

He also represents legal professionals in disciplinary matters.

Mr. Butters has tried hundreds of criminal and civil trials and arbitrations. In addition to Massachusetts courts, Mr. Butters has handled cases in New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Montana, California, Florida, Ohio, Iowa and Kentucky. He has also argued cases before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, Massachusetts Appeals Court, the First Circuit Court of Appeals and Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Notable Cases

Examples of some notable cases include recent $1, $3 and $35 million arbitration awards; an acquittal on all charges in a federal mafia racketeering trial, which lasted four months and included three murders and numerous other racketeering offenses; and after four years of investigation, a complete declination, both criminal and civil, in a healthcare fraud investigation of a physician wrongly accused of accepting drug company kickbacks by federal authorities; and a recent jury trial in Suffolk Superior Court where he obtained a jury verdict for his client, a real estate investment company, in a $25 million dollar employment claim.
